Jack pulled soul after soul and sent them to heaven. Or Sanctum, whatever. The heartless man leaned heavily on her, as she got him to the floor. He struggled to breathe, and the tiny light I saw in his eyes was softer.

The man, Diego, had soft, black curls that lost their shape. His hair curled around his ears, with a five o’clock shadow starting on his chin. Jack tended to him like a wounded animal. I’d never seen her move so tenderly. Diego didn’t shy away from her, but he looked uncomfortable.

I was uncomfortable.

The longer I took in all of the details of his face, the more I realized how many other details about him were missing. His human face was attractive, but he was incomplete. Where were the creases in his face? The lines around his eyes or mouth? He was almost airbrushed, like his skin lacked texture. Lovely at a glance, unsettling to look at. Jack caught me staring, and I knew she felt it too. This man was truly broken.

“You know a spell that will save your life?” I asked him.

“Sort of. I need the pieces of my heart first.”

“Then what happens?”

“I don’t know.”

“You damn well better find out.”

Jack beamed at me; I was always on her side, and seeing her so invested in this man had me invested too.
